BILL
SUBJECT
DATE
The Business Council opposes this legislation, which would impose a two year moratorium on the siting and transportation of liquefied natural gas in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The current law imposes a moratorium only on New York City.
During the past two years, there have been a series of public hearings on Long Island to address the issue of public safety and the hazards posed by the transportation and storage of such gases. This moratorium seeks to address the fear that public safety is in jeopardy.
Passage of this bill would have a damaging effect on Long Island residents who receive the benefits resulting from this gas. This measure would cost jobs and eliminate a critical supply of energy for this area.
The laws of New York currently ensure the safety of the public through a comprehensively designed and stringent process. Existing requirements balance the needs of the state and the public, while ensuring a sufficient supply of liquefied natural gas that is essential in the generation of electricity.
For these reasons, The Business Council opposes adoption of S.6265 /A.9022.
