partnership, putting up a roadblock to changes and reforms
necessary to help the state's business community,

The Business Council's members have voted to restructure
the organization's governing document in order to
give members better control of the Board and to ensure that
the organization can take full advantage of the talent and
commitment of its Board members
ALBANY—The Business Council's Board of Directors re-elected
Linda Sanford, senior vice president of enterprise on demand transformation
and information technology for IBM, and Kirk Gregg, executive vice president
and chief administration officer of Corning Incorporated, as co-chairs
for the year ahead
New York's business climate will not improve
unless the state's business and government sectors stop
"talking past each other" and begin to address
the many state policies that undermine growth, Alair Townsend,
former deputy mayor of New York City in the Koch administration
and long-time publisher of Crain's New York Business
said while accepting the 2007 Corning Award for Excellence
Saying that members of The Business Council are New York
State's "the movers and the shakers," Senate Majority
Leader Joseph Bruno urged The Business Council and its members
to "step up and speak out" for policy changes
in Albany that would enhance the competitiveness of the
state and its business sector
Thanking The Business Council "for being such a strong partner and a great friend," New York Governor Eliot Spitzer Wednesday pledged not to raise taxes next year despite a looming budget deficit that he estimated at $4 billion.
"Next year, we must not, we cannot and in fact we will not raise taxes," the Governor said
ALBANY—Governor Eliot Spitzer will provide the
keynote address Wednesday, September 19, at The Business Council's
Annual Meeting at the Sagamore in Bolton Landing. The Governor is scheduled
to speak during a dinner that is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Both Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno and Assembly Speaker Sheldon
Silver are also scheduled to speak at the Annual Meeting, which will run
Wednesday through Friday September 19-21
ALBANY—Alair Townsend, who played a key role in charting New York
City's fiscal and economic recovery in the early 1980s while serving
in top management positions under former New York City Mayor Ed Koch and
later emerged as a prominent newspaper publisher and business leader,
will receive The Business Council's Corning Award for Excellence
for 2007
ALBANY—Seven Upstate New York Counties earned a grade of F in a
new report by the Public Policy Institute aimed at gauging the health
of New York and its counties.
The report, The 2007 Stagnation Index, measured population growth, employment,
personal income growth, and growth in average wages per job for the 10-year
period ending in 2007
