Mary D. Madden

President & CEO
Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union

As President and CEO of Hudson Valley Credit Union, Mary Madden leads one of the largest credit unions in the United States.  She has spent more than 30 years educating people on the value of belonging to a not-for-profit financial cooperative.

Under Mary’s leadership, Hudson Valley Credit Union has become the largest locally-based financial institution in the Hudson Valley with assets of $5 billion and more than 300,000 members.  In 1995 when Mary joined HVCU, they served 102,000 members and held just over $817 million in assets.  Mary has lead almost every area of the credit union, including Operations, Marketing, Lending, and Human Resources.  Holding a variety of senior management roles, culminating in her appointment as President/CEO in 2002, Mary has been part of the team that took the credit union from a single-employer group to a community chartered one that provides a full complement of financial services for individuals, families, and businesses—from savings and loans to financial investments and insurance products. In 2019 she spearheaded the credit union’s conversion to a New York State charter, ensuring better opportunities for future growth by expanding its field of membership.

The credit union currently employs over 800 people, and has 20 branches in Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, and Putnam Counties.  Membership in the credit union is eligible to anyone who lives, works, worships, volunteers, or attends school in Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Ulster, and Westchester County. For five years in a row, Hudson Valley was designated as one of the Best Companies to Work for in New York State (Large Company Category).

Mary has been an active participant in the Hudson Valley community since she joined the credit union.  She currently serves as a Board Member for Mid-Hudson Pattern for Progress, as well as the Nuvance Board of Directors. She is also a member of Nuvance’s Planning Committee, Finance Committee, and Governance and Nominating Committee.  Mary was appointed in 2013 as one of four local representatives to the Central Hudson Board of Directors, following their merger with Fortis. She also serves as the Chairperson of their Audit and Risk Committee.

Locally in the past, Mary has served on the boards of the American Heart Association; the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation; Mt. St. Mary College’s Advisory Council; Vassar Brothers Medical Center; the former Dutchess County YWCA; the Bardavon 1869 Opera House; and the Dutchess County Arts Council.  She was a member of the Filene Research Council and served on the local advisory panel reporting to the national Community Deposit Institutions Advisory Council (CDIAC) for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. She was also a founding Board Member of Collaborative Concepts, a not for profit arts organization and gallery in Beacon, New York.

In 2013, Mary received the Woman of the Year distinction from the Junior League of Poughkeepsie for her leadership and commitment to community.  She was named the 2011 Business Person of the Year by the Poughkeepsie Journal.  In August of 2010, Mary received the Commitment to Community award from the Greater Southern Dutchess County Chamber of Commerce.  The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation named her their recipient of the 2005 Hope Award for community leadership.  She also is a past Athena Award Honoree of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Mary holds an MBA from the University of Massachusetts and a BA from Indiana University.  She earned the designation of Certified Chief Executive Officer as a member of the Credit Union Executives Society (CUES).
