Marist College to host school funding debate Oct. 19

Questions surrounding the funding of New York’s public education system will be the subject of a debate between fiscal policy experts Wednesday, October 19, at Marist College in Poughkeepsie.

The debate, sponsored by Marist College School of Management and Marist’s masters in public administration program, will feature Frank Mauro, director of the Fiscal Policy Institute, and E.J. McMahon, director of the Empire Center for New York State Policy.

The debate is scheduled from 7-9 p.m. in Marist’s performing arts room and is open to the public free of charge.

Both experts will address issues surrounding school financing, including:

  • The funding responsibility of the state government and local school districts.

  • The methods used to finance education at the state and local level.

  • What resources may be needed to improve educational outcomes.

  • How to ensure education funding is used effectively and efficiently.

Marist College is located approximately 1 - 1.5 miles north of downtown Poughkeepsie on the west side of Route 9.
