The Business Council of New York State, Inc. supports S.3026 (Ranzenhofer) / A.1738 (Hevesi) which would authorize computer science courses to count as a math or science credit towards liberal arts degrees at higher education institutions.
In October 2014, the New York State Education Department allowed the use of computer science to count as a math or science credit for a regents or local diploma 1. Institutions of higher education in New York should also be allowed to follow suit.
Computer science education has implications across industry sectors and will continue to be a crucial skill set of the 21st Century workforce. Employers will only have an increased demand for a workers with a wide range of computer science skills.
The Business Council supports programs which not only help students attend college, but those that also help students prepare for employment opportunities and ensure New York has the qualified workforce needed to further grow our economy. As such, the Business Council supports S.3026 / A.1738 which would allow computer science courses to count as a math or science credits towards liberal arts degrees at higher education institutions.
