The Business Council has formed an Independent Contractor Work Group to consult with business representatives on the Governor's Independent Contractor Task Force. The new work group will hold its first meeting at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at The Council's Corporate Woods Office in Albany.

The group was formed because the eventual recommendations of the Governor's Task Force could have a significant effect on many industries.

The Department of Taxation and Finance, the Department of Labor, and the Workers' Compensation Board all rule on whether a person is an employee or an independent contractor-and sometimes reach different conclusions.

The Governor's Task Force was created last spring to clarify the difference between an employee and an independent contractor. The Council has long sought this clarification to create consistency among these three agencies and to enable employers to know before they hire if the person will be an employee or an independent contractor.

All Council members are invited to the Nov. 3 meeting.
