ALBANY -- The Business Council of New York State today announced support for two Assembly bills that would create performance standards for teachers, teaching assistants, school administrators, and supervisors -- and enforce those standards through a new licensing system.
"Creating and enforcing performance standards can enhance quality in any enterprise, including the educational enterprise," said Margarita Mayo, The Business Council's educational specialist.
"The proposed performance standards and systems for enforcing them are much like similar standards already being used to measure New York's schools and schoolchildren," she added. "Expanding this approach to teachers and administrators is a logical next step."
Mayo praised the proposals for requiring teachers and administrators to continue their education, staying current in both the content and techniques of their professions.
"This will ensure that New York's teachers are at the top of their profession," she said. "Coupled with the new recognition of teaching and administration as professions, this will ensure that our educators are the best professionals and are recognized as such."
Mayo appeared at a news conference today with Assemblywoman Sandra R. Galef of Westchester County, sponsor of the bills, A.8959 and A.8960.
