Four Business Council member companies have won the 1998 Governor's Awards for Pollution Prevention for their outstanding environmental protection efforts through the use of pollution prevention measures.

The awards were presented by Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner John P. Cahill at the 11th annual Pollution Prevention conference in Albany in June, which was co-sponsored by DEC, The Business Council, and the Environmental Business Association of New York State.

The awards recognize pollution prevention practices that exceed legal requirements and reduce or eliminate the generation of pollution at its source. Awards were given to companies representing small and large businesses.

Applications were judged by representatives of business, environmental, and government organizations on their project's success at reducing hazardous pollution, as well as the overall environmental record of the applicant, the economic benefits of the project, the extent of employee participation, management commitment, community involvement, and the applicability of the project to others.

Winners include:

  • ITT Automotive-Fluid Handling Systems, Gates, Monroe County.
  • ITT Fluid Technology Corporation, Seneca Falls, Seneca County, formerly Goulds Pumps.
  • Lockheed Martin Ocean, Radar & Sensor Systems, Syracuse.
  • Oneida Limited/Oneida Silversmiths Division, Sherrill, Oneida County.
