Capital Area Urban League

April Land is the President and CEO of the Capital Area Urban League (CAUL), a community empowerment organization that enables underserved urban residents of Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Montgomery, and Saratoga Counties to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights.

In 2000, she began her undergraduate work at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD before deciding to step into over 20 years of experience in organized labor working strategic campaigns and other labor relations in the public sector, private sector, across the US and in Canada. She moved to the Capital Region in 2007 for an opportunity to work for one of the largest unions in New York State and was selected to attend the Havard Trade Union Program in 2022.

Her work with a renewed Capital Area Urban League began in 2020 and led to her taking on the role as its executive where she insists that coalitions, active and engaged community best drive progress. It’s through coalition under her leadership that the organization’s Clean Energy Workforce Development Program was developed. She plans for the program’s electrical pre-apprenticeship to operate at scale in the region by 2027.

As the President and CEO of the Capital Area Urban League, April looks to continue to organize for the advancement and progress of underserved urban communities by building coalition and pushing for the types of partnerships and collaborations that go beyond a bottom line but rather center community and environment, invest in coalition, and commit to ensure mutual benefit. She looks forward to growing the Capital Area Urban League and increasing its impact throughout the region and state.
