Peter I. Bijur, chairman and chief executive officer of Texaco Inc., has been nominated to serve as chairman of The Business Council's board of directors.
William F. Allyn, president of Welch Allyn Inc., has been nominated as vice chairman, and Alair Townsend, publisher of Crain's New York Business, has been nominated as vice chair for finance.
The election of officers will be held Wednesday, Sept. 22, at The Business Council's Annual Meeting at The Sagamore in Bolton Landing.
Bijur would succeed Lewis Golub, chairman and chief executive officer of the Golub Corporation.
Bijur joined Texaco in 1966 and moved through a progression of assignments in marketing, sales, and management. He was named to his current position in 1996.
For the last year, Bijur has served as vice chairman of The Business Council.
Allyn joined the medical sales department of Welch Allyn in 1962 and founded its industrial division in 1966. He became company president in 1980.
Allyn would chair The Council's Policy Committee, which oversees the development of The Council's public policy priorities and its legislative strategies. He would be in line to succeed Bijur next year.
Six new members of The Business Council's board of directors are also up for election at the Annual Meeting. They are: William E. Davis, chairman and chief executive officer, Niagara Mohawk Holdings, Inc., Syracuse; Paul J. Ganci, chairman and chief executive officer, Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp., Poughkeepsie; Martin Mucci, president, Telephone Operations, Frontier Communications, Rochester; Charles R. Perrin, chairman and chief executive officer, Avon Products, Inc., Manhattan; Ivan Seidenberg, chairman and chief executive officer of Bell Atlantic, Manhattan; and A.J.C. Smith, chairman, Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc., Manhattan.
In addition, Wallace Altes, president of the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce, has agreed to sit with the board representing local and regional chambers of commerce.
Also at the Annual Meeting, Erland E. "Erkie" Kailbourne, retired chairman and CEO of Fleet National Bank and a business leader known as a model of corporate citizenship, will receive the Corning Award for Excellence. The Council presents the award each year to a New Yorker who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishment and a deep and sustaining commitment to the people of New York. The award is sponsored by Corning Incorporated.
