Micro-credentials have tremendous opportunity to add value to a higher education portfolio and help business and industry better understand the skills students have acquired with their education. The State University of New York (SUNY) has introduced and expanded their use of micro-credentials in the past three years and will share their approach with colleges and universities and businesses.
SUNY micro-credentials serve as pathways to continued success—providing earners with immediately applicable skills and often stacking with other micro-credentials and educational and professional experiences to satisfy initial or advanced degree or certificate requirements. Workforce focused micro-credentials can be used to: upskill or retrain existing workers; add complementary skill sets to existing knowledge (to prepare incumbent workers for transition and position new grads to better meet the needs of business); and provide a new access point to higher education.
