ALBANY— How New York’s business and regional leaders can help their communities become competitive in the emerging global economy will be the topic of March seminar hosted by the New York State Economic Development Council (NYSEDC) and the state office for Science Technology and Academic Research (NYSTAR).

The March 18 and 19 seminar, which will be held in Albany at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, will examine the forces driving the new economy, how other communities around the world are attracting new business and how colleges and universities are helping to foster innovation and job creation in New York.

Participants will hear from a variety of public and private sector leaders including Robert Bell, co-founder and executive director of Intelligent Community Forum; Charles R. Craig, vice president of science and technology administration and operations for Corning, Inc.; Anthony DiMaso, vice president of strategy and development for Verizon Communications; Nick Donofrio, executive vice president of innovation and technology for IBM; Dan Gundersen, the upstate chair of the Empire State Development Corporation; Alain Kaloyeros, vice president and chief administrative officer for the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering; and Ed Reinfurt, executive director of NYSTAR.

The agenda also includes:

• A presentation on how global corporations are adapting to the global environment.
  
  
• A discussion on how to make your community competitive by 2013. This session will include a presentation on Empire State Development’s plan to make New York’s regions competitive.
  
  
• An overview of the creation of Albany’s emerging nanotech economy.
  
  
• A presentation on how telecommunications is changing the world.
  
  
• A forum, led presidents from leading New York colleges and universities, on how academic institutions play a role in New York’s economy.

Business Council members may attend the seminar at the NYSEDC member rate of $150.
