STATEMENT FROM BUSINESS COUNCIL PRESIDENT
DANIEL B. WALSH
ON REPORTS OF ANOTHER HANDOUT PLANNED FOR DENNIS RIVERA
ALBANYAnother taxpayer-funded handout for Dennis Rivera? New York doesn't need it and New Yorkers don't want it.
But if reports in the New York Sun and elsewhere are accurate, a "technical cleanup" bill moving through the Legislature includes new spending in excess of $100 million. The purpose of this spending is to provide health insurance, at taxpayer expense, to unionized health care workers.
New York's Legislature just insisted that it had to impose heavy new tax increases to fund $1.3 billion in new spending beyond Governor Pataki's proposal-even though the state faced a shortfall of $12 billion or so. New spending, in our current fiscal straits, is the last thing we need.
What a shameful idea. If New York really has $100 million lying around, the Legislature should return it to taxpayers by reducing the tax increases it just dumped on New Yorkers.
