THINGS
What has New York got that no one else does?
Besides the largest city in the nation, New York is home to the
U.S. side of Niagara Falls, the Carrier Dome (Syracuse), and the
Baseball
Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Lake Placid was home to the both
the 1932 and 1982 Winter Olympics. The Legend
of Sleepy Hollow and Rip
Van Winkle both take place in New York.
We have two of the (very) few meromictic
lakes in the U.S. Ithaca, in Tompkins County, is host to over
150 waterfalls, all of which lie within a 10-mile radius of
downtown.
And we don't know if we can prove it, but we're pretty sure Syracuse
has the only upside-down
traffic light in the country.
But you probably knew all those things. So we asked some New Yorkers
to tell you what they think is the neatest thing about the state.
Here are some of the replies we received:
"Most people living outside New York State have no idea how
beautiful it is -- they think it's been all paved over. My favorite
beauty spot is the Adirondack mountain wilderness. But the outdoors
environment is spectacular all over the state — and we get
four real, no-faking seasons in which to enjoy it, too."

Shaffer, Albany
“There’s nothing like jumping off a bluff of
pink granite into the cool, fresh water of the Saint Lawrence
River on a hot summer’s day. The Thousand Islands region
has been my family’s favorite place to be for three generations
running.”
Skye Heritage, Glenville
"One of the first things that comes to mind is the Western
New York restaurant chain Dinosaur Barbeque. That's quintessential
New York." Bob Ward, Albany
