Sales Tax "Reform" Roundtable
The Business Council is participating in a legislative roundtable on sales tax issues next Wednesday, June 9th from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The roundtable is being sponsored by Senator Liz Krueger, Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Tax and Budget Reform. It is being held in Room 124 of the Senate Capitol. Participation is by invite only, but the roundtable is open to the public. The public notice is available here.
Among the issues that participants are being asked to considered are:
- should the state extend the sales tax to generally include services;
- would more streamlined sales tax rules, such as those outlined in the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement, improve state and local sales tax collections;
- would expansion of New York's excise tax base be more progressive or regressive than an expansion of its sales tax base;
- are there any sales tax exemptions that should be eliminated to strengthen the sales tax base and improve progressivity and equality?
Any input from Tax Committee members on these and other sales tax related issues would be most appreciated. Please feel free to contact me by return email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone 518-465-7511 x205.
