Governor's Deficit Reduction Plan

As you know, yesterday Governor David Paterson released his proposal for $5 billion spending reductions for the current fiscal year and for Fiscal 2011. His press release is available online, and a presentation on his proposal is available on our web site.

His plan includes the previously announced $500 million in across the board cuts in non-personal service administrative spending, and another $1.3 billion across the board cuts in local assistance spending (the list of proposed local assistance cuts is available here) based on a ten percent reduction in most local spending categories over the remainder of the current fiscal year.

Business Council President Kenneth Adams released the following statement in response to the Governor's proposal:

With New York facing a $3 billion budget deficit in this fiscal year, The Business Council of New York State is supporting Gov. Paterson and calling on the legislature to act now to stop the ballooning deficit that is threatening the state's fiscal integrity.

Governor Paterson has proposed a number of cost saving measures that we believe will help balance an already bloated budget and help New York's economic recovery. The plan includes fundamental structural reforms including public employee pension reform and imposition of a state spending cap.

New York has spent too much for too long and created a very serious budget crisis. Decisive action is required now to close the current gap and crushing deficits projected in future budgets.

We urge you to send a message to our legislative leaders today.

E-Advocacy Efforts to Support Budget Cuts

Last seek, The Business Council launched its “Fix New York Web site. Fix NY allows users to send letters, e-mails or faxes to the Governor as well as state and federal legislators, and will give member companies and their employees a new tool for making their voices heard in Albany.

Our initial Fix NY advocacy effort will focus on the need for budget cuts as part of a state deficit reduction effort. The Business Council of New York State is supporting Gov.
