2004 Priority Issue

Issue:

This bill would expand New York's wrongful death statute by authorizing compensation for grief and emotional loss in a wrongful death action. The bill would increase the cost of liability for many New Yorkers. Automobile, general liability and medical malpractice premiums would all rise. The bill is sponsored in the Senate by John DeFrancisco (S.2994) and in the Assembly by Helene Weinstein (A. 6637). The Business Council is strongly opposed (legislative memo).
