2004 Priority Issue
A bill that would duplicate current provisions of the state's human rights law, S.5708 (Marcellino)/A.7073 (DiNapoli), would provide protection to persons wearing a customary turban as an exercise of their sincerely held religious beliefs. The current human rights law provides such protections and also provides limited employer undue hardship relief. This bill does not. TBC memo in opposition.
On June 22, 2004, the bill was committed to the Senate Rules Committee. No action since then.
6/11/04 S.5708 was discharged from the Senate Finance Committee on May 5, 2004 and is currently on the Senate calendar # 949. A.7073 remains in the Assembly Governmental Operations Committee.
