- Update on State Draft Plan Under the Every Student Succeeds Act
The Business Council is one of the many groups involved in the New York State Education Department’s “think tank,” which was convened to discuss various concepts that will be included in the state’s required draft plan under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the law that replaced No Child Left Behind. Since ESSA places more power back to the states, as opposed to the federal government, each state has flexibility in creating an accountability system. The Business Council has joined with civil rights organizations, parent groups and local chambers to advocate for a state system that maintains high standards, prioritizes closing achievement and opportunity gaps, ensures transparency and provides support to those schools that need it the most. Education/Workforce Development Committee members will receive updates in the coming months regarding the progress of the state draft plan and the work of the coalition.
