Open letter to the NYS Board of Regents in support of a CTE pathway to graduation

Dear Members of the New York State Board of Regents:

We the undersigned organizations support a career and technical education (CTE) pathway to graduation. The “skills crisis” in the U.S. continues to grow, and many students are ill-equipped with the real-world skills necessary to find success in college and the workforce.

There are approximately 3 million open positions in the U.S.; however, employers are finding that a well trained workforce is not always available, and many of these jobs remain difficult to fill.

We urge the Board of Regents to consider an alternative yet equally rigorous pathway to a high school diploma that would include the following:

  • Preservation of high educational standards aligned with industry need;
  • Input from the business community in program development;
  • Emphasis on meeting labor market needs, especially in STEM fields; and
  • A work-readiness component that incorporates academic, technical and employability (e.g. working in groups, critical thinking) skills.

The business community recognizes the urgency in moving forward with the CTE pathway. New York needs a well prepared workforce if we are to prosper as a state. We look forward to working with the Board of Regents to ensure that students have the skills they need to be successful in the 21st century economy.

Sincerely,
