MAY 1998Mayors, businesses, professionals, schools, others seek tort reform
New Yorkers for Civil Justice Reform, a coalition of local government groups, school districts, businesses, professional groups and associations, and hundreds of others urged lawmakers to pass the Volker-Morelle Civil Justice Reform Act.
"Those seeking tort reform include businesses that want predictable and reasonable liability, municipal governments that don't want to raise taxes to cover liability costs of their playgrounds, and even not-for-profit organizations," said Business Council President Daniel B. Walsh.
Continuing to ignore the breadth of support for tort reform, "S.O.S. Justice," a group sponsored by trial lawyers to oppose tort reform, charged insurance companies and big business with "selling a defective bill of goods."
