North Country aid
Gov. George Pataki has proposed two programs to make state grants available
to small business owners and dairy farmers affected by the North Country
ice storm.
"We must take action to ensure the economy in the North Country is
given every opportunity to recover and return to normal," Governor Pataki
said.
The North Country Business and Agricultural Relief Act would authorize
the New York State Urban Development Corporation to use $3 million to
establish the North Country Small Business and Agricultural Economic
Relief Program in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Lewis, Jefferson, and St.
Lawrence counties.
The Empire State Development Corporation would be authorized to provide
up to $5,000 in grants to businesses, farms, and agricultural enterprises
for damage to farm property and equipment, livestock, and business property
for companies with 500 employees or fewer.
