McGowan nominated to head Labor

Governor Pataki has nominated James J. McGowan, a firefighter and union leader, to become Labor Commissioner.

McGowan has served for the past ten years as president of the New York State Professional Fire Fighters' Association. He broke with other labor leaders in 1995 to support Governor Pataki's reforms of the workers' comp system. But state AFL-CIO President Edward J. Cleary said organized labor will urge his "rapid confirmation" by the Senate.
