JULY/AUGUST 2006 HR QUESTION OF THE MONTH

Q. Where do we stand on New York’s minimum wage?

A. New York State's minimum wage matched the federal minimum wage until January 1, 2005. At that time, it rose to $6.00 per hour from legislation passed earlier in 2004. That legislation also called for it to rise again to the current state minimum wage of $6.75 per hour effective on January 1, 2006. The final increase to $7.15 per hour is due on January 1, 2007. The federal minimum wage remains at $5.15 per hour but New York employers are required to observe the state's higher minimum wage.
