QUESTION OF THE MONTH
Q.
We
are entering a slow time for our industry and are thinking
about a temporary layoff of several departments. We'd like
to avoid this, if possible, and wanted to know if there are
any programs that could assist us.
A. The
"Shared Work Program" is administered by the New
York State Department of Labor and may be able to help you.
It is a voluntary program that provides employers who are
facing a temporary decline in business with an alternative
to layoffs. Rather than laying off a percentage of the workforce
to cut costs, and employer can reduce the hours and wages
of all or a particular group of employees. They can then receive
partial unemployment insurance benefits to supplement their
lost wages.
