Q. How
much an I charge employees for uniforms that I require them to wear on
the job?
A.Charges
may not be made to employees by employers who supply, maintain or launder
uniforms, including shirts with a company logo, required by the employer
while the employee is performing job-related duties. If employees are
required to purchase uniforms, they must be reimbursed no later than
their next paycheck.
If an employer requires that uniforms be worn but does not launder or
maintain them, employees at or near the minimum wage of $5.15/hr. must
be reimbursed at #3.05/wk. for employees who work 20 or fewer hours,
$5.05/wk. for 30 hours per week, and $6.40/wk. for 30 or more hours per
week, for the care and laundering of their uniforms.
If the employer has a dress code requiring employees to wear non-uniform
clothing that may also be worn off the job, the employer is not required
to purchase, provide or pay for the cleaning and maintenance of this
clothing.
